I, for one, really don’t care. Most of the folks at my day job think I’m absolutely bat shit crazy because I ride all year round, even when the temps dip down into the teens or there’s a nice rainstorm coming through the area. About the only time I drive my truck is when the bike is down for repairs or I have to pick up the kids after school, or the conditions are a little too harsh for them.
All three of our kids and the Word Witch ride with me, but their level of tolerance is a wee bit lower than mine.
Now, why do I bring this up?
Mainly because the Word Witch and I recently returned from a week-long vacation to the Asheville, NC area for our 20th anniversary, and the weather kinda sucked.
For what ever reason, the last week in Western North Carolina has been wonky as hell. It reminded both of us of living in Florida when you’d get that afternoon rain, but it didn’t really go away till the wee hours of the morning.
We both wanted to ride as much as possible, so we got out early most days with a plan for lunch somewhere new before returning to the rental to veg out and stew in the hot tub.
I’ll do several individual review posts about the places we went later this week, but the one thing I wanted to make sure and mention here was that almost two years after Hurricane Helene swooped through the region, there is still a significant amount of damage. Some places more than others, but it still exists.
Besides relaxing and getting to see some cool ass shit, I also had the opportunity to catch up with a buddy of mine (Matt Byrd) from my last duty squadron, the 2nd FS, It had been about 33 years since we saw each other last, but it was like yesterday. He led us on a little ride around the area, and we ended up at the VFW in Hendersonville for lunch.

Writing up several articles on our rides around the Asheville, NC area that I’ll be submitting to motorcycle magazines, as well as my next Braxton Hicks short story and an outline for a post-apocalyptic novel series..
Listening To
Most of the trip, I was listening to Led Zeppelin and Blackberry Smoke playlists on Spotify. Great tunes to chill and relax to.
Writing Tip
Finding your “Zen” to be able to put words on paper is different for everyone. Be it a coffee shop, an Airbnb for the weekend, or whatever helps you to get to that place where the words flow, and your world comes alive. If it doesn’t come to you immediately, try different things till you find that thing that works.
Keep your pens sharp and the shiney side up.
